Tourism in Inner Areas: The Case of Cammino Terre Mutate seminar

Dear student, please consult the schedule for Tourism in Inner Areas: The Case of Cammino Terre Mutate seminar.

The seminar will take place on March 24th 2025, 8:30-11:00 am, B building, Room P25

The seminar explores the role of tourism in inland areas of Italy, giving an overview of potential and criticalities, national policies and bottom-up projects.

According to the National Strategy for Inland Areas (2014), inland areas are territories – often mountainous and rural – lacking in essential services, depopulated, but rich in resources. In the last ten years, these areas have been at the center of a dense debate, often dominated by urban-centric imaginaries that represent them solely as tourist destinations for citizens.

In the first part of the seminar, an overview of the geography of inland areas will be given, analyzing the main tourism policies, visions and actions that affect them. What happens when in these peripheral areas the conditions of peripherality are transformed into factors of attractiveness?

In the second part of the seminar, slow tourism and regenerative tourism will be discussed, a recent tourism design strategy that aims at the regeneration of vulnerable areas, such as post-earthquake contexts. This tourism model aims to support local economies and promote alternative development approaches, in contexts affected by socio-natural disasters. The case of the Cammino nelle Terre Mutate, which crosses the inland areas of central Italy affected by the earthquakes of 2009 and 2016-2017, will be discussed.

The seminar is part of the Territorial Management of Sustainable Tourism course by Prof. Francesca Sabatini, in the Master’s Degree Course Tourism Strategy, Cultural Heritage and Made in Italy. It is aimed at students, and open to public participation.

NOTICE/PROPOSAL OF CURRICULAR DIDACTIC INTERNSHIP – Deadline 12 of March 2025

The project in which curricular internships are offered consists in the preparation and realisation of a University event on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, called by the United Nations Organisation in 2002 and since then celebrated worldwide on 21 May. The University event, which will reach its fifth edition in 2025, is an opportunity for the academic community to appreciate the colours of cultural diversity through unique personal stories/experiences and is mainly focused on the presentation of interviews made by some students or other members of the academic community to artists or museum directors/curators from their place of origin (Italian or foreign). The aim is not to deepen a scientific-disciplinary focus, but to increase intercultural dialogue and knowledge in the academic community.

Interested students can send their applications to the following e-mail address no later than March 12 -2025: info@tourismstrategy.lettere.uniroma2.it, the object of the email must be indicated with these words: “APPLICATION FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY PROJECT”, a short letter of motivation should be attached to the e-mail in which the student indicates why he or she decided to respond to the call for applications, and a certification of the exams taken.

Classes updates

Dear students,

I want to inform you about the new scheduled calendar that you can find on our website.

There you’ll find all classes, and a simplified list with only courses of your degree.

Then I want to share two fast but important notes:

1st – we fixed the calendar and you’ll find only one course, the correct one, for “Territorial Management of Sustainable Tourism” held by prof. Sabatini, no other is scheduled but that one;

2nd – the course of Digital Tourism will be scheduled soon and held by prof. Riccardo Cocco

As you see, we have more courses than the previous year.

For 1st year students, they’ll find all in the study plan organized by groups. For students enrolled in past years, the new courses can be only put in their study plan using the group “Optional Coruses”.
